Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is a method of collecting income tax in India, under the Indian Income Tax Act of 1961. Any payment covered under these provisions shall be paid after deducting a prescribed percentage. It is managed by the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT) and is part of the Department of Revenue managed by the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). It is very important to understand the process of TDS filing, especially if you are a business owner or a salaried individual.

What is TDS?

TDS is one of the techniques used to collect taxes, by which a certain amount is deducted at the time of payments of various kinds such as salary, commission, rent, interest, professional fees, etc. This deducted amount can be adjusted against the tax due of the deductee. It is a means of collecting income tax in India, serves as a base for the government to collect tax in order to minimize the tax evasion by taxing the income (partially or wholly) at the time it is generated rather than at a later date.
 

How to File TDS Returns?

TDS returns are required to be filed after specified intervals and should include details of the TDS deducted and deposited by the deductor. Here are the steps to file TDS returns:
 

  1. Collect all the necessary information including PAN numbers, amount of TDS deducted, type of payment, TDS challan information etc.
     
  2. Make sure all the TDS returns are prepared in the correct format. The file format is provided by NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited).
     
  3. Once the file has been prepared as per the file format, it should be verified using the File Validation Utility (FVU) provided by NSDL.
     
  4. If there are any errors, they should be corrected and the file should be verified again.
     
  5. Once the file is verified, it can be submitted at the NSDL TIN website.
